- As long as the industry pays for all its costs without government subsidies
- I'll consider nuclear power as an option when it is compared to other alternatives without any government subsidies. If it is as safe as it says, then it shouldn't have any trouble getting private as opposed to government liability insurance. It needs to fully pay for waste disposal and storage of spent nuclear material, along with all other costs, without any subsidies or writedowns or government participation. Then we can see if it is feasible and compare it with other utilities and power alternatives. I'd rather see us develop a clean technology than another one that has such harmful waste products and safety hazards. I believe we can do it if we dedicate our nation's best and brightest to the problem, and who knows what we could come up with. Check out the material called "liquid smoke" as an example...there are possibilities we haven't explored and inventions that could help. The effort needs to be continuous, and should be the one of the most important scientific endeavors we undertake, even more so than NASA if forced to choose (which is saying a lot, given that I'm a true NASA fan, having grown up during the space race). Unfortunately for nuclear power, the ultimate problem still exists that it only takes one accident, and we have a no-man's land for hundreds of years. Look at the Ukraine and Chernobyl and think about where in the US we can risk that. Would you want that near your home? In your city? I know France has them but we aren't running any of our domestic programs like the French (Perhaps if we got their health care system, we'd be willing to risk the nuclear program). But as long as there are costs that the industry isn't paying for, it isn't a fair or accurate comparison to any other energy alternative. It isn't cheap and it isn't clean, and I think we can do better.
