Some smaller schools are way ahead here
I teach engineering at two schools in CT. One (University of New Haven) has a core (required) course for non-technology students to give them an appreciation and understanding (as well as the necessary vocabulary) of the role that engineering and computer technology plays in their lives. The other (Fairfield University) has a liberal arts core that is much richer than that proposed at Berkley as well as a one year required freshman course for engineering students that emphasizes the important role that engineers play in our modern society.
