The beauty of "first to file"
The real beauty of the "first to file" rule for big patent mills is that they can patent the inventions of others. For the small inventor, filing an acceptable and correct patent application can be daunting. Where large corporations (GE, Microsoft, Boeing, etc) have expert patent lawyers on staff who's only job is to file patents. If these companies even get a whiff of a small inventor's efforts, they can easily beat him/her to the patent office with an application that is vague enough to encompass the invention of the small inventor.
