I'd have to say you are

on to something here ShadeTree. That is a HIGE drop, especially for a new product that is supposed to be the best thing since sliced bread.

Ya know, there may be another reason. Not having WiFI, (being tied to AT&Ts slower network) connectivity is being hit pretty hard as the product's weakest point by users as well as reviewers. Now if Apple listened to users and has already put together a new IPhone with WiFI, cutting the price by 33% on existing stock a few weeks before release of the new version makes sense.
