Open Source has done this for years in the amateur realm...
- A cheap web cam and and "stacker" software available freely on the web, which automatically sifts through thousands of images and assembles them, has enabled some amazing astrophotos by amateur astronomers on a shoe-string budget, astronomy-wise. Perhaps this is a recent development for professional installations, but the technique is nothing new at all.
- It's good to see they can get that resolution without the expense of a space telescope, however! (grin) I'd not think this a death knell for space telescopes, either, since the atmosphere strips away a lot more than mere resolution...
