Single vendor efficiency
Ok, first... no such thing as Linux lock in. Alot of code that works on Linux will work on BSD and will also work on Apple and AIC, and other flavors of Unix. Also with Cygwin and other utilities, the same code can even run on Windows. So no, unless software vendors only release versions for Linux (which currently is not even close to the case), then Linux lock-in has yet to even be a reality. Even most open source projects release a Linux and a Windows version.

As for single vendor efficiency, how efficient is patching all the time? How efficient is downtime?

I always say that a car manufacturer can make a good car, maybe even a great cra, but can the make an equally good airplane, subamrine, refrigerator and ham sandwich? They can't all be great products and none of them answers ALL your problems. This is why 70% of all IT depts are mixed. Because no one vendor can answer all problems... not even one with a monopoly on the desktop.
