There's a lot they forgot or just don't have...
As a computer operator in the Air Force, I remember quite well the IBM and Hewlette/Packard mainframes. The CPUs themselves were the size of an average bedroom; hard disks were around a 24" diameter and multi-layered; tapes were used as backup (the tape drives were about the size of an average apartment closet). Oddly enough though, memory and storage was still measured in KB (kilobytes) and CPU speed measured in KHz but able to handle the functions of 100 or more users. I also find it quite funny that with all the "upgrades" made to mainframe/server systems. the connection/function speeds don't seem to be much faster - even compared to broadband. Of course I realize there's a lot more data being sent/recieved. But think - other than size, what REALLY made GHz/MB system a 'need'?.. I remember the first PC I purchased: An Amiga 1000! Whoa! I was stylin'! And, ya know, with all the documents, video/animations and music that I created and stored on that system the only upgrade I made was a ZIP drive! I currently use a PIII system with 327MB of memory - it was given to me. I record music for bands and create video montages for people and I've been thinking of getting a new system to handle newer standards and the ability to create DVDs.
Thanks for bearing with me.
Jim
