Never had an expectation of privacy
So you have the right to privacy on the internet? Great. So when some sociopath steals identity information from you, please yes, stand on your feet and howl to the moon that you had a right. What to do about it? Call the cops - that is worse than useless - as all that will happen is yet another layer of data regarding yourself gets written somewhere, spreading the potential for more damage. Bad guys won't get caught, and if they are nothing will really happen to them.

So what to do? Realize that the internet is a sewer - and behave accordingly. Firewalls and AV software for starts. Multiple accounts that have no relation to your real self for another. Lie lie lie - be the rash in terms of data inconsistency. Make it as expensive as you can for the other SOB to keep data about you. Be creative, be inventive, be vindictive.
