With the incredible pressure from "Wall Street" on companies to show
increases in sales and net income each and every quarter, and with so
much executive compensation tied to their company's stock performance, it
is easy to see how such manipulation could and does occur. The real
question is how many companies have not yet been caught in, or admitted
to, such shenanigans? I suppose "the market" must somehow discount the
possibility in share prices in general--and that could be someone's PhD
thesis!

Seriously, it emphasizes the inordinate external pressure on companies and
that leads some big ones like SAS to remain private, even when they could
potentially raise huge sums by going public. It is interesting!
