Both Right
Shraven and Jazzy Jeff are right, ethanol is not the solution but status quo is obviously not acceptable. As Shraven points out there will be many technologies that will come in to reduce our dependency. In my opinion the largest impact will come from going back to look at how we make the things that consume energy, our cars, homes, offices, appliances and industrial processes.

Electric engine while being less prone to fault, and should have a longer life span, batteries and all, will also make use of potential energy much beter than today's IC technology. Potentially they may be coupled with fuel cell, sterling or ethanol engine as a supplimentary power source.

Ethanol will be a small portion of the equation, maybe 2% at best, but as long as it comes from what would otherwise be waste product and does not deprive the forest of material required to help it recover from generally innefficient harvesting practices, it definitely has a place in the mix.

Regards,
Don
