- Who's the real moron?

Politicians left and right have lined up behind ethanol because that's how you buy votes in Middle America. First, it was the Energy Policy Act of 2005, demanding 7.5 billion gallons by 2012.Then came the White House, ordering up 35 billion gallons by 2017. Now it's Congress with the new Biofuels Security Act of 2007 that calls for 60 billion gallons by 2030.
The goal, they all claim, is oil independence from the Middle East.
The only way to do that with ethanol, says one study, would be to convert ALL U.S. FARMLAND to ethanol production. No more corn for cattle. No more wheat for bread. No more rice or soybeans or any other crop, unless it could be converted into fuel. And then you'd STILL need 20% more land; quota land that WE DON'T HAVE AVAILABLE!
According to mainstream news source MSNBC, you'd need 129,000 square miles of farmland just to hit Bush's 35 billion target. That's an area the size of all of Kansas and Iowa combined. And with a deadline only 10 years away.
Even by 2008, it's looking like U.S. ethanol refineries will suck up more than double the 60 million bushels originally estimated by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
Our farmers might as well try building a suspension bridge with a box of toothpicks. There's NO WAY, given current resources, that they can possibly keep up with this kind of demand. But don't count on anybody cutting you in on the truth about this great swindle at our expense.
That's right. While the whole corn-to-fuel program balloons into a wealth-endangering investment bubble, you're paying for it with YOUR tax dollars in the form of huge handouts from the U.S. government.
Corn growers get subsidies for planting the crops. General Motors and Ford get a kickback for making cars that can burn ethanol blends. Gas refiners get money for mixing ethanol with their regular unleaded. Meanwhile, fat tariffs keep ethanol from Canada and Brazil out.
Oh, and has anyone mentioned the enormous amounts of water ethanol productions consumes, water we DO NOT HAVE to spare. Various western states are already squabbling over precious water rights. Or didn't you know that?
This has got to be one of the most expensive boondoggles in American history!
You said you wouldn't mind saving money on cheaper ethanol fuel. Did you know that ethanol provides 60% of the energy that gasoline does, meaning that it gets LESS mileage than gasoline?
We have available, RIGHT NOW, the technology to help get us to where we need to go - the plug-in hybrid.
