Ethanol
Ethanol is a very poor gasoline substitute. Internal combustion engines require twice as much ethanol as gasoline to run efficiently, a much higher compression ratio than gasoline, and great spark advance. And how do you start these engines in winter? Ethanol burned in internal combustion engines produces two carcinogens and lots of nitrous oxides. Go figure. And look at the price of corn right now.
