Renewables simply aren't up to the task, given current technologies.

Not quite. Energy consumed is energy consumed, and still must come from somewhere. The pollyannists believe that oil, and the need for oil, will disappear if we switch to electric. It won't. It will still be used to create the energy to power the vehicles, and in the plastics of the vehicles, and the rubber of the tires, and the asphalt of the roads, and the grease of the bearings, swivels and hinges, and....

Please elaborate on your heavily subsidized statement. You didn't give enough insight into your thinking regarding this one.
