Plenty to gain
Remember, an electric vehicle doesn't have to solve all problems for everyone to be a good solution for some problems.

One gain is less pollution produced in the city. (Even if a power plant produces pollution elsewhere.) Also, electric (and hybrid) cars don't run while stopped in traffic.

Another gain is that you could charge your car from solar cells on your home roof.

Third, we don't have to generate electricity from coal -- there are several other very good choices. I'm hoping we can start building nuclear power plants again soon.

Another technology we need is HTSC power transmission. Currently 2/3 of the electricity we generate is lost to power line inefficiency. And, of course, no one wants the new power plant built next door to them.

With improved power transmission we could have large (really large) thermal solar plants in Nevada sending power to California.

So fully electric cars will be part of the solution to our energy problem. Don't denigrate it just because it's not some magic all-in-one solution.
