Just realized, you probably meant power line transmission. If you did, ignore what I wrote about gears . . .

But it still won't help you. You need power to pump oil from the ground. You need lots of diesel to power ships. You need power to pump oil through pipes. You need diesel or gasoline to transport oil via train or truck. Oil needs to be refined if you want to make gasoline - that alone is probably a lot more power than needed to transmit electricity through power lines.

The power lost though power lines is probably very small in comparison to what's needed to go from oil in the middle east to gasoline in your car.

The power through the power lines can also come from a variety of power sources, including renewable ones. You can't use hydroelectric, solar, wind, or other clean and renewable resources for a gasoline car. With an electric car, however, we can work on changing our power plants and ultimately solve the problem.
