HP is better?
It's difficult at best to sort through financials to see who is outperforming whom. As far as who is "best", that's about as subjective as you can get. On the financials side, HP would seem to be beating out Dell but closer inspection reveals that it's not as cut and dry as it would appear. For example, looking at Q1 of 2008, Dell reported revenue of just over 14.6 billion dollars. For the same timeframe, HP reported revenue of 20.2 billion dollars. The problem with this comparison is that HP does much more than just PCs, servers and laptops. HP actually does a pretty decent job of breaking out revenue by division, so looking at only "Personal Systems Group" and "Enterprise Storage and Servers" seems like a fairly good starting point to compare to Dell. It could be argued that the "Imaging and Printing Group" should be included, but I'd have to disagree. Dell currently doesn't have or want to have many offerings in the markets that HP does, like medical imaging. They've been pulled kicking and screaming into just offering a few Dell branded printers. Anyway, that narrows the gap significantly. Dell reported revenue of 8.7 billion dollars in the "Personal Systems Group" and 4.5 billion dollars in the "Enterprise Storage and Servers Group". This comes to 13.2 billion dollars if you're counting, a bit less than the 14.6 billion dollars reported by Dell in a "down" quarter.

As an aside...the prevalent opinion as to why Commodore pretty much disappeared completely from the technology map was the departure of Jack Tramiel. Of course, one of the things that changed was their decision to start pushing distribution out to K-Mart. This paradigm really doesn't apply to Dell since their primary business model has been direct-to-consumer and direct-to-business sales, so they haven't really p*ssed off dealers like Commodore did.
