Microsoft thought it was completely legit the way it had licensed the IP from Fraunhofer-IIS, which was widely thought to be the definitive patent holder for MP3. The Fraunhofer portfolio lists about 20 different patents, but there are actually MANY MORE patents issued by the various Patent Offices concerning MP3 and related compression technologies, some people estimate there are more than 60 distinct patents owned by a dozen different companies. Some of the patents are ludicrously vague and broad, others cover digital encoding algorithms that are obvious applications of digital/analog concepts that lost patent protections decades ago and should have never received patents of their own.

The sad thing out of all of this is that the only winners out of all of this are the patent lawyers, who are getting rich while stifling worldwide innovation because of the patent mess.
