It's the public.
How many techies have been the brunt of jokes about them, often while working on the joker's broken PC? (Broken meaning they poured soup into their laptop keyboard.)
Then you have organizations like The Wallstreet Journal which publish articles about how to circumvent your IT department - as if we're some huge evil empire intent on killing productivity. (This from a publication which claims to be for business and profit!)
Then you have Execs/managers/users/clients who view you as useless when things are working and idiots the minute something breaks (even if it's due to user error or carelessness, or just plain cluelessness about how to use something.)
Lastly you get told you're a cost center and add nothing to the bottom line, so your costs have to be minimized to just beyond the point of effectiveness so the stock value goes up 2 pennies.

Where would one find job satisfaction in that environment?
Yes, I work for the money. If I didn't need money I'm sure I could find more inspiring things to do with my time than babysit and handhold a bunch of losers, err I mean users, who don't like me anyway.
But that doesn't mean I'm only in it for the money and couldn't be happy doing my job. I came to this field because I liked computers afterall, giving up a managerial position in accounting. (Lateral move from nerd to geek.)

But really, how many people hate going to the salon? Where's the comparison? Perhaps they should have compared us to going to the dentist...
