It's a constantly unattainable dream
Echoing the skeptics who have already typed in their views, I would never want to see the average driver have access to the sky. As a pilot of a high performance single engine aircraft with an instrument certification, I understand that most people lack the interest, understanding and temperament for being the pilot in charge of an aircraft. On the other hand, for those who are qualified and understand 3-d aerodynamics, such personal transportation would be great. The future of transport on a local level is mass transit and computer-controlled personal vehicles. A recent visit to Los Angeles reinforced my view that many drivers are dangerously pushing the envelope and relying on a second set of eyes to avoid catastrophe. In the sky there is no bump, bend and pull over option.
