Green or gridlock, or both
I fear the same people on the road being in the sky, bringing their driving skills to new heights and lows.

The change in the nature of cars would be more of my liking. Take most of driving out of the human hands and let vehicles run as if on a track, guided to their destinations and fully 'aware' of the surrounding traffic. No more merging into a lane already occupied by a vehicle, no more tailgating, or excessive speeds or lows. The gridlock should change as the behavior is improved upon and accidents are reduced. Given the pressures and problems people bring to their commuting experience, not just being airborne but being assisted is needed to change the jam.

As for the car, we may not have flying cars, but the tech exists that they could and should run cleaner, greener. If we can't get the hydrogen car up and running within a decade, the electric car should be much easier, especially if the automotive industry stops trying to kill off such non-oil ideas.

Can personal aircarft beat gridlock, . . . for the few who would be ready to use it properly, yes. Does it beat overall gridlock, not for the near future of its existence, unless it bypasses the human errors that make car gridlock what it is today. It might give birds and bees a new reason to change their flight patterns.
