Great concept, and...
The challenge goes far beyond the technology of the vehicle on which the system is based. The key will be how the system is implemented to improve the existing model.

On the plus side, the infrastructure changes required would spark significant innovation and rethinking of our transportation systems. This effort is already well overdue.

On the other side, as a pilot, I feel considerable apprehension at the thought of allowing the same ignorance we see currently on our highways up into the skies. We, as a society, get to recognize the features and limitations required to make this a system safe for its users...unlike the chaos of our current automobile-based system. (Where'd that soapbox come from ?)
