Another Way to Avoid the Real Issues
This is just another way Congress is avoiding the real issues that we, the people, want answers for. This is just an attempt to get 'permission' to monitor people on the internet (which the government already does), not just predators. The recent passage of the phone tapping legislation is proof of the paranoia that the government is instilling in the people and how we, the people, are letting the government take our fundamental freedoms away.
The Department of Missing and Exploited Children already handles complaints of internet exploitation and predation of minor children through the Internet Crime Complaint Center at www.ic3.gov. The internet is a huge, vast space filled with information, fun, and games for everyone. But, it is also filled with hatred, racism, exploitation, predation, scams, and fantasy. As an adult, most peeps have common sense enough to fully research anything that looks too good to be true (as it usually is thus called a scam). Children do not know to be leery of peeps online. In their innocence, they are trusting of what they are told. Everyone loves flattery and individualized attention, the very core of what online predators use to lure their victims. It is a parents responsibility to monitor a childs use of the internet and teach them how to be safe on the internet. I know a lot of parents are not familiar with how to use a computer and most children these days can use a computer proficiently. Again, it is a parents responsibility to learn computer usage and safeguards and implement those safeguards with their children. Web browsers have security levels that can be set by a parent. Operating systems allow for additional user profiles to be set and passworded. There are software programs available for child internet surfing safety. Keylogger and screenshot programs are available for monitoring computer usage. It is a parents responsibility to ensure the safe usage of the internet, it is not the responsibility of Congress. Parents should be held responsible for their childrens usage of the computer and internet. The internet is not a babysitter or a toy. It is a vast source of information and entertainment but also can be a source of headache, heartache and deadly.
