Catastrophes: 12, Lessons Learned: 0
I'm still waiting to see what New York City is going to do about its main water feed lines. They built those lines with room for expansion, but then the city's size/population exploded and the lines have been operating at full capacity ever since. Now the lines are so deteriorated, they could collapse at any moment, but we can't shut them off to do the repair work. Experts have been warning about this for years, but the city isn't willing to spend money fixing something that hasn't completely fallen apart yet.

The day those pipes finally fall apart, the entire greater New York area will be cut off from its main water supply running around like nobody saw this coming. They'll declare it a national emergency and will proceed to take OUR tax money (nation-wide) to pay for new lines and give it away as part of a relief effort. Only then will they realize that spending some LOCAL money ahead of time would have made more sense and cost 0 lives.
