Considerations you are ommitting
I can hear loud pipes when there is a moto in my blind spot. Without looking (I will anyway) I at least know there is a moto nearby. You argument, while valid in some ways, does ignore a large confounding factor: the population who placed loud pipes on their bikes when the Hurt Report was written may have been more prone to riding in a way that would put them at risk for more accidents, thereby skewing the data.

As I have a round-trip 120 mile commute everyday in my car, I welcome motos with loud pipes as they reduce the chance of me crashing into them for any reason, because an auditory warning is just another way (lights, horn , etc.) that the moto can be noticed.

I would say that your argument is incomplete.
