Let's get rid of one big MYTH right away
One of the biggest lies is the old "Loud Pipes Save Lives" crap that people claim will make them safer. People use this baseless excuse to make excess noise (and tick off lots of non-motorcycle riding public).

This was confirmed by a comprehensive study of motorcycle crashes by Harry Hurt known as the "Hurt Report". The study found that motorcycles with loud muffler were just as likely to be involved in an accident as a bike with a stock muffler.

Exhaust noise exits the back of a motorcycle and goes backwards. Those people you've passed can already see you. If you want people in front to hear you, why not ride with the horn button pushed the whole time. Send the noise in a useful direction. I doubt any sane person do this.

The best way to avoid accidents while riding a motorcycle is with proper training and practice. Noise cannot replace skill. Even with that however, there's still stupid drivers and accidents will continue to happen which are usually the fault of the car driver. Car drivers need to be more attentive to motorcycles, bicycles and pedestrians, ie. things smaller than themselves, not just other cars. I suspect your coworker is not very educated

"not necessarily at the highest rates available on the odometer"
I'm not sure what this means, but motorcycles will easily travel with the flow of other traffic. If you don't, your creating a safety hazard.

Aloha.
