The artist has a contract with the record company to sell his work as you call it. As soon as the record opens another source of venue to sell the same work, I am sure that the contract expands to cover both companies so in essence he is working for both. Besides I am pretty sure that Eminem's lawyers made sure that the contract would be in a way that it would accomodate any changes.

And no this has nothing to do with greed, but it ensures that you get PAID fairly for your work.
