Greed is the cause
I remember going to Believe in Music when they had a clearance sale in the back of the store with mass bins of cassette tapes. Even at the greatly reduced prices (half or less, as I remember) I could afford to buy only one or two. I was an average late teen with an average late teen income. My point is that the record companies priced themselves out of good favor with the general consuming public trying to make a fortune on every single tape of CD. Just look at the lifestyles of the music execs and the artists and ask yourself; 'Do they really deserve to live so far above normal society for simply providing some entertainment?'.

When the public conceives their being cheated, they'll push back.
