Almost right...
I agree with you that it's a parent's responsibility to use the tuner and on/off switch with regard to what their kids see on TV.

Now, here's what gets my ire...

Why is it that when watching a show that is basically rated "G" and acceptible for my kid to watch, the station will then air ads for shows that I would not allow my kid to watch? But that's not the part that really bothers me. The part that bothers me is that the some of the commercials themselves could be rated PG or even R. Why does my kid need to hear swear words during commercials?

Monitoring is one thing. The ads just sort of sneak in there and once the words are uttered, the damage is done.

If stations could be trusted to air "G" rated commercials during "G" rated shows, then your theory would work very well. Unfortunately, broadcasters cannot be trusted to comply with this idea on their own. So either I banish my kid from watching TV, or I record everything on videotape and zap the commercials. THAT could become a full-time job, and who has time for that?

I suppose we could just not watch TV at all and all those marketing $$$ would be wasted on me and my family.
