Intentional dumbing down to boost DSLR sales.
Camera companies are intentionally dumbing down once great cameras like the canon G series, the Pro-1, etc simply to boost their DSLR sales. How else will they sell a low end toy like the 400D or Nikon D40 when a compact does it all?

Second point: they're now eliminating anything in common between the DSLRs and compacts. This means you can't share batteries, CF cards, etc between your DSLR and compact, i.e., it doesn't make a good backup camera.

As a long time canon user I am disgusted with this. My old G6 had RAW support, BP-511 batts which would work with my 10D, CF card which would also work on my 10D, etc. Now nothing.

I dumped canon and went Fuji. At least their P&S are way better in image quality, build and response time.
