Sony R1
I'm surprised that there was no mention of the Sony R1 in this article. This camera used a full size APS sensor (i.e. same size as used in Nikon DSLRs), and had a fixed lens. It was rather large though, and pricey too ($1K) and now discontinued.

I'd like to see some models with various but decent zoom ranges, i.e. 27-150 and 38-210 and that use a sensor at least 3/4", or maybe as large as Olympus's Evolt cams with 4/3". Most current chips for compact cameras have sizes roughly 1/2.5" (0.4") which is horrible for noise or detail (many cameras use noise suppression processing that smothers noise and detail together), and also horrible for achieving a narrow depth of field. Want to separate your subject from the background by ONLY focusing on your subject? Can't do it easily with a compact cam. Larger sensors definitely help, as long as you keep a good wide aperture like f2.8.

On the other hand, it does make it easier to focus.

And don't forget image stabilization - currently on my must-have list, especially for small cameras that shake easily when the shutter button is pressed.

Dream on...
