6 billion dollar purchase
Lets remember that natural monopolies are - well - natural and not illegal when monopoly power isn't utilized to perpetuate them. Then lets see Microsoft management's 6 billion dollar purchase for what it is. It is a mechanism for supporting technology investments that the IT industry obsoleted just a few weeks ago with the open sourcing of Flash and the announcements regarding JavaFX and the Iphone.

No advertiser is going to see the conversion of their materials to Microsoft proprietary format as something worth paying for. The 6 billion dollar purchase allows the appearance of free conversion. But of course free is overhead and built into pricing just like the "free lunch" prospective advertisers get.

Microsoft loses in search are directly related. Consumers are not well served when the search engine doesn't follow the leader but instead follows just Microsoft standards. Do you want to know what is on TV or just what is on MSN. It is the same deal.
