Build security in instead of bolting it on

Yes, the new breed of virus is getting increasingly sophisticated, as is the new breed of spyware. Virus programmers get better at what they do and Windows boxes are incredibly easy to pork. That's the deadly combination and there is no easy fix. Security has to be built in from the beginning, not bolted on as an afterthought. The real problem with computer security is that Windows is fundamentally unsafe.

And there's always some twit who trots out that dribble about if Linux was as popular as Windows there would be just as many Linux pests, you can stuff that. It's not true. Although I will grant there wouldn't be any difference in the intelligence of the user base. Social engineering exploits have a bright future regardless of the underlying OS.

If you really want to stop virus threats, disconnect your Windows box from the Internet. Then it will be safer, faster and far more stable. It was just never meant for connected environments and it takes more kluge and external software to keep it running right.
