However, if you happen to value easy integration, great development tools, etc. and a massive pool of available development staff, you might want to continue proprietary software.

Well I, personally, happen to like and use Eclipse for an IDE and the Tomcat, Apache, MySQL trio for infrastructure for stuff. Good and cheap.

Now as for the you have to go proprietary for all that I disagree completely. IBM's Professional Services people are one of the largest IT consultancy groups around and they've fully embraced an agnostic approach to technology solutions.

What things do proprietary software do VERY well?

As a focus to that: In the business arena what difference do you gain in integration by say adopting a .NET solution over a JAVA/EJB solution?

You're not fighting against religion, you're getting called on your assertions. Remember if you make a statement you need to be prepared to back it up.
