Agreed. However, I think its useful to remind developers that WE have control over how much open source product is developed. The decision of how much should be developed SHOULD be based on real consideration of the economic ramifications.

Without the monopoly forces now in play in the current software market, Windows would be much less expensive and would be priced in accordance with it's true value.

Seems a bit odd to say this after you made it clear that Linux with extras did everything you wanted it to do. Could it not be that the market offers a premium for compatibility/features/economics of scale atop the platform? Cost wise, it is cheaper to be a Windows user, given that EVERYTHING works on your system and finding developers easy.

How much has Windows really imporoved or innovated in the almost 10 years (an eternity in the computer world) since Win95?

We disagree profoundly on that, but that might be due to the fact that I develop for Windows. Windows is DRAMATICALLY different today than when windows 95 came out. That, however, is a long discussion.

But MS has managed to put $50bil. in the bank and this is due in part to the fact that they were the only game in town.

I disagree. People aren't stupid, and there have ALWAYS been alternatives. The issue is not the lack of alternatives, but those pesky consumers aren't doing what the experts think they should do.
