I've gotten exactly one political spam: a plug for the California voucher initiative almost 4 years ago. Wasn't hard to track either; took about 15 minutes to trace it back to the political consultant who wrote the initiative in the first place (it lost).

I don't think you're going to see a lot of mainstream candidates resorting to spam directly, since it will tend to lose more votes than it gains. However, I think we are likely to see spam used to distribute anonymous hit pieces (probably about a week before the election), as well as plugs for little-known candidates with nothing to lose (particularly extremists like the one mentioned in the article).

I'm still hoping that the backlash against political spam is severe enough that only the truly desparate will try it in the future, but I'm not holding my breath.
