EJB impact
You have to be aware of what is happening in Java Land and our industry standardization. Both IBM and SAP have gone EJB. Enterprise Java Beans means that MySQL's lack of foreign keys and triggers (I think the latter recently was added to MySQL) isn't a problem. Integrity is maintained at the object (bean) level rather than through the database management system.

The two most hated members of any IT team are the network administrator and the database administrator. In this Web 2.0 Java World both those roles are less controlling. The software developer gains at their expense. Rise Programmers.

I think that many view MySQL as an efficient way of publishing data on the web that has gained efficiency and performance at the expense of transactions and foreign keys. If you look at Eclipse based tools such as Rapid Application Developer from IBM and know how to apply UML and patterns and realize that the standards for EJB 3.0 are just about done then you can see the end of Microsoft SQL Server, which has only benchmarked well on the 64 bit Itanium, a scandal-linked technology where everyone involved (at HP, Intel, and Microsoft) now have new jobs and the chief researcher (Gray) disappeared with sailboat at sea a month or so ago.

Thanks for the post. This MySQL news is very significant to Microsoft and everyone else. Nonetheless there is nothing preventing Microsoft from getting into the MySQL business as well. This is what Microsoft did with Linux, AKA Suse Linux when they married Novell.
