... most rational and intelligent post I've come across in this thread so far. You knocked it out of the park with that last sentence.

If only people realized that they work for half of the year before they see any actual money that they can keep, they might begin to suspect that they are all slaves. On average, half of all the wealth that individuals produce in this country is confiscated by the local, state, and federal governments. This is bad enough as it is but the amount of lost potential income is much higher when you factor in an estimate of the productivity and wealth lost to a taxation-induced retardation of economic growth in the US. Without the heavy tax burden of the past century, our economy would undoubtedly be several times larger than it is today (in other words, the American rich, poor, and middle classes would all enjoy a level of wealth that we will not now see for another 50 years or more).
