Some people do use it as business
I know a few people who sell good they make using E-bay. I've know a person who sells crafts on E-bay and makes good money. Another sells knitted items on E-bay and again make good money. They auction gets them more money than they could get selling them for a flat rate.

Still like you said these people I know do pay taxes purely because they can't write off business expenses. One case the woman who runs the scrapbooking classes my wife attends goes on trips all over the world to scrapbooking conventions. She gets to write part of that off as a business expense and whiles she's in LA for example they hit Disney Land.

My Wife is thinking about doing this too now because of what she's seen.
