Your "real operating systems" are comparatively user unfriendly!
Hmmmmm, my reply to that would be that an operating system allows you to use your PC in as easy a way as possible. Even the nicest, most user friendly, *nix distros involve horrible (and for the uninitiated, unintuitive) command line procedures. I've been using Ubuntu Edgy for a while now, but more so I can experience it, not because it's a good system to use from my point of view!

Anyway, I'd also argue that if you're getting BSODs, it's probably not Windows, but more likely a poorly written driver. A vast consumer base requires vast compatibility, and lets be real, *nix is used primarily by technophiles who know what they're doing. If we replaced every single copy of Windows with *nix this very second and told everybody that it was for the greater good you would get a) a lot of p***ed off PC users who have lost their comfort blanket, b) a lot of confused users who have lost their nice task-driven interface, c) a sudden plethora of worms, trojans, spam, viruses etc. from all those nice hacker types who have a massive new market to exploit (let's face it, no system is 100% secure, and if they think they can and there's enough installs out there, they will!).

By the way, I know it was Windows splash screens (incidentally, what about MCE? Did that have a splash?) but can we give it up for the good old MS-DOS 6.22 command prompt? Can I hear a testify? A hell yeah? Anyone?
