Real operating systems vs Windows
You have identified one of the most important characteristics of Windows vs others ... Windows isn't really an operating system.

Linux is, MAC OS is, Unix is ... but not Windows. It pretends to be an operating system, even looks like one, but it singularly fails to behave like one. For example - you don't need to re-boot Linux. Or Mac OS. Or Unix. You may re-boot if you wish, but you don't HAVE to re-boot. That's my criterion satisfied - if the system operates (runs and runs) it's a genuine OS. Otherwise, it's not.

I fondly remember a Windows machine that would freeze up at random at some point after booting and before any logging on took place. We decided that it was actually the most efficient version that Microsoft had produced - you didn't even have to log on and do some work to make it freeze up solid. Saved a lot of trouble.
