Real OS
Look, Mac crashes, and must be rebooted. Linux hangs and must be rebooted. It's not a question of whether you WANT to reboot or not. When your PC stops responding you HAVE to reboot. I've used Apples since the Apple IIplus, and Macs since the original Macintosh. I've used Windows since 3.11. I've used Linux since 1997 (Caldera, OpenLinux, RedHat, Corel Linux, Mandrake, and now using Ubuntu 8.10) and they've all locked up and required reboots. Recompile your kernel to install a new device driver...yeah, that's what makes it a real OS? Spend hours and hours researching how to get a printer driver installed and working, only to find the output doesn't even remotely match the screen...yeah, that's a real OS? Look, I'm not a Linux basher. I play with Ubuntu and really like compiz. It's cool. Fun. I can do some basic BASH scipting. But it's nowhere near as easy as Windows. Linux HAS come a LONG way since the days of OpenLinux, but it's still got a long way to go before it becomes my primary OS. It's got an even longer way to go before I can give it to my wife and expect that she can use the PC the way she wants.

So how about this criteria for a "real" OS: Can my wife use it and easily do what she wants with the PC? Can she do it without calling me into the room every 5 minutes for help? If not, then is it really a "real" OS?
