From the CEO of an outsource company recommending outsourced patch management. Now there's a shocker.

But that overlooks some serious issues confronting the IT managers I know when it comes to patch management:

- Higher level managers demanding particular functionality that exposes their system to a virus.

- Outside vendors connecting to the network. That would include turn-key systems for specific functions.

- One word: Laptops.

- The need to test patch effect at the application level. This probably accounts for the majority of my billing lately. The customer applied the patch which then tanked an application. A lot of times IT wants to apply a patch but they're afraid of what's going to quit working.

None of those would be adequately addressed by an outsource vendor. Even if they could be the cost would be huge. And it doesn't address the real underlying problem that Windows is an inherently insecure system. When you consider the amount of money that has to be devoted to anti-virus software, mail filters, the amount of system resources for virus scans and bolting security on top of the OS, and the amount of time IT staff has to take in virus and patch management, I can't believe anyone still uses Windows. And now you want to add an outsource vendor at even greater expense. Forget it.

I solved my Windows security problems at home by disconnecting that machine from the Internet. The same conclusion many of my customers are reaching.
