new career path needed for techies
Unfortunately, American business feels entitled to a steady stream of young, talented engineers that can be worked hard for 10-15 years and then discarded. The potential discards have gotten the message, thus fewer and fewer domestic engineering graduates are available today. "Fear not" say the industry moguls, we'll just hire from overseas (H1-B) or outsource. [For more on this corrupt attitude, see the Wall Street Journal's editorial page for Monday, March 27, 2006 where - incredibly - the writer (commenting on the limited supply of H1-B guest worker visas) says "We don't think any cap is necessary."]

Major business media in the USA are openly hostile to the engineer's paycheck!

But here's a better idea: Why not adopt the sports career model where players typically get a decade on the field before they are dropped. I propose we pay degreed engineers $500,000 to $1,000,000 per annum right out of college. Then, when industry kisses them goodbye, so what? The tech-savvy will have accumulated the bankroll they deserve and can take up any new career or business venture they choose (just like a retired sports pro).

The alternative is the existing corrupt situation: colleges and employers using ridiculous salary and employment projections to sugar-coat technical careers that too often are short-term dead-end drugery.

Why sweat for an engineering degree and then spend a decade or more paying down the student loan? (You will note that Bill Gates did not fall into this trap.)
