Let's see, the guys at JBoss don't have financial incentive? MySQL?: And you are somehow saying that they do not have close contact with customers??? Open source programmers can actually have very close contact with customers. The customers are even reading the source code and helping code at times. I think you are a little confused here. The feedback is immediate, with customers downloading even pre-alpha code and offering suggestions.

With closed source, a lot of close contact is not possible. The biggest thing is that customers can NOT look at the source code. Customers at times are left completely out of the planning loop, for reasons of corporate secracy. Sure proprietary software companies are trying to figure out what customers want, but they often can not directly involve the customer like in an open source project.

And, it is for sure that a cusomer can't just download the software and make it do what he needs, and then offer up the changes for all. With proprietary software, he has to beg and pleed, wait 6 months, then pay and pay again for his own ideas, IF YOU ARE LUCKY.
