Linux great server platform, desktop eh.
Linux has made great strides and improvments over the years. It definitley offers a cost effective server platform. I just dont see it as a big seller on the desktop for many various reason. Its not that linux desktop hasnt improved, or that KDE, Gnome etc cant offer a similiar GUI OS experience. The problems vary but here is my take:

Linux has no full support for commercial applications and limited support for commercial hardware (drivers etc). This isnt just about plug and play (which is also limited and crude), its about the full support for drivers and software from hundreds of vendors and software companies. Without it, its a bit like an empty shell. Sure you have your obscure open source stuff out there and a few linux versions of commercial software but its very few compared to Windows and Apple.

Linux has no good commercial distribution chain. (although Dell may change that). So much of what Linux needs is business and commercial. This is somewhat the antithesis of the whole linux, open source community. How do you survive and compete as a commercial product without making business relationships that will involve profit making? Do you smell a catch 22 here? I do. Everytime a linux oriented company tries to grow commercially as an entity to improve and differentiate their product to compete (Red Hat, Novell) The linux world goes beserk.

Oh and Games. Yes having an OS platform that has rich support for games (game companies making their games to run on Linux) would actually help its popularity on the desktop.

Again this isnt a rant that Linux is bad, its just some things to consider if anyone thinks it would be a viable desktop platform equivilant to Windows or OSX for the general consumer.
