Two Things
Firstly, it doesn't seem like the music companies realize that DRM locks them in just as firmly as it locks in consumer choices. Choose BrandX-DRM and suddenly your potential market share equals BrandX-DRM's market share, and not one jot more.

Maybe you could increase market share by using BrandX-DRM on one music sale site and Banana-DRM on another site. But trying to support multiple DRMs increases production costs which limits profitability, and provides more opportunity for something to break.

Secondly, perhaps declining sales since 2001 has more to do with the product than the technology. What year did cRAP music replace the top forty?
