I think the Labels need to understand that their words are not trusted because they have proved untrustworthy, ripping off artist royalties then crying foul when they get ripped off, all the while claiming that the pirating has ripped off the artists. Just for the record, a recording contract ensures that all the expenses for the recording are deducted from the artist royalties. therefore most artists do not end up making anything worthwhile out of their albums until they go gold. The reality is that if an artist could get a substantial part of the CD sales value, they would only need sales of several hundred (not hundreds of thousands) a week to make a comfortable living.
The industry could promote the virtues of people paying for copyright material, but then their own culpability would be exposed. Until they are prepared to own up to their past and present dishonesty and actually make amends and take steps to do the right thing by all concerned, they cannot expect others to do so, regardless of how much they claim 'right' in on their side.
Their willingness to play fairy tale makers with their support of the star system creates a few people with absurd amounts of money (which most have publically shown they are psychologically ill-equiped to handle) and everyone else has to have a 'real' job to keep paying the bills. $20 million would provide a reasonable incomes for a lot of artists, but in one artist's hand, just means a huge mansion (with its attendant upkeep costs) that they could not possibly utilise. But how easy is it to break into a market purposely engineeered to reduce major labels' promotion costs by promoting fewer, but big name, artists resulting in a lower total advertising bill on what they consider sure bets?
The music industry has been backpeddling from supporting artists for years, so it is not surprising that the public is not supporting them. All karmic consequences really: what you put out, you get; what you don't give, is taken! - Posted by: Patanjali Posted on: 02/27/07 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
