MS says what is in their best business interest like any other corporation.

If you remove the "business" qualifier you're saying MS will say anything it's in its best interest to say.

I agree. Unfortunately that puts it, and all similar legal entites, in the company of children and sociopaths when it comes to expectations to do what's right. It's the role of those of us with developed consciences to supervise children, sociopaths and corporations, so, yeah, if they can't play nice with their toys they should be taken away.

If you look at the history, the behavior that was incented by patent protection was the disclosure of the invention. Not inventing it. The determination made that the public benefitted from granting a monopoly in return for the disclosure of the recipe for the secret sauce.

Modern software/process patents are granted with you and me getting nothing in return. That's just wrong.
