how to use the latest Microsoft applications?
I hear this as a reason to use MS products instead of looking to see if there is
another way. Do you really mean everyone needs to know only Word 2007? Most
employers that want only MS product users don't get productive employees.
Employers that get people that understand the basic concepts and can translate
that knowledge to whatever tool is available have a better chance of being
productive.

People who know how to use a word processor can use any version of Word with
only a little time spent finding the buttons and menus that have the required
tools. People who only know by rote how to use one version of Word have a hard
time and need retraining to be effective with another version.

If MS wants to get these kids they should set up learning games that teach the
concepts for developers and programmers, not the specifics of one set of tools.
