The idea that a non-living entities (corporations) can literally "own" human culture is a perverse idea and very bad for the future of humanity. Shakespeare's plays were all based on "prior art" as were most of the scientific discoveries that we depend on for modern life. Science cannot be conducted behind closed doors without the validation of the scientific community as a whole. Almost all modern music is dependent on the work of Bach, Mozart and others. Disney's most lucrative works were based on "public domain" material. The current "intellectual property" industry would lock up all cultural advance and try to collect a toll on all thought. If there were no checks on these folks, innovation would become impossible because everybody would have to hire an "intellectual property" attorney to clear all their thoughts before they could express them.

I agree with the poster above. We'll all be better off when we become our own entertainment, as we have been throughout most of human history.
